雪見れば白き月影白き花　
敷島人のこころたとえて

「雪月花」はノーベル文学賞の川端康成が、日本人の美意識や特質を表現しようとした言葉として知られています。
出典は、唐代の詩人白居易の詩の一節「琴詩酒友皆抛我　雪月花時最憶君」（寄殷協律）から採られたものです。白居易は字（あざな）を白楽天といい、楊貴妃を歌った『長恨歌』で多くの人たちに親しまれています。
「琴や詩や酒の上での友はみな私を離れてしまった。雪や月や花の美しい時に君のことを思い出す」と詠っていますが、私はこの詩の雪月花……が好きで、高校生の頃から口ずさんでいました。
また、「 雪の上に照れる月夜に梅の花折りて送らむはしき子もがも 」と大友家持が『和漢朗詠集』に詠っています。
なぜ古から、雪と月と花が日本人のこころを捉えてきたのでしょうか。
鎌倉時代に福井の永平寺を開いた道元禅師の頌（じゅ・詩）に『清白家風梅雪月（せいはくのかふうばいせつげつ）』というのがあります。「私たちの禅風は梅の花のように白く芳しく、雪のように白く清く、月のように白く淡い」というものです。
これと同じ禅語となっているものに『霜月照清池（そうげつせいちをてらす）』というのがあります。「白く霜が降りたような清らかな池を月が照らしている」という意味です。これらはいずれも禅の悟りの世界を表現したものといわれ、特に「月」は悟りを現わす対象として好まれています。
日本人は清廉潔白という言葉のように、白というイメージに特別の思い入れがあるようです。雪、月、梅花、霜月など、これらに共通するものは白のイメージです。
白という色は、日本人が良しとしてきた日本の精神性を最もよく現わしているイメージで、清らな心根、ケガレのない思い、直なるすがたというものに直結するような気がします。日本の国旗の白地に太陽の赤は、最も日本的なすがたを現わすものとして象徴的です。
人は、うそ偽りの多い俗世に生きることを余儀なくされていますが、次代を担う若者たちには、少なくともこの白のイメージを伝え遺してきた先人がいることを知らせる必要があるように思います。
雪と月と花は、私の恋心とともに消えることなく暖かな灯火となっています。

雪月花
（Setsu-Getsu-Ka; seasonal beauties in Japan : snow, the moon, flowers; scenes of the seasons) (It is one word, but these three things are often included separately in one poem.）
Setsu-Getsu-Ka is my favorite word.
Yasunari Kawabata, a Japanese Nobel Laureate in literature in 1968, preferably used it to express the sense of beauty or the characteristics of Japanese.
It is originally excerpted from a poem composed by a Chinese poet Bai Juyi (772-846).
Snow, the moon and flowers have long been included in Waka (a 31 syllable Japanese traditional poem) or other forms of poetry.
Regarding the reason why snow, the moon and flowers have been attracting Japanese, I think about the fact that Zen priests frequently explained their principles or Zen spirit symbolically referring to the things such as snow, the moon and flowers (especially of Ume, Japanese apricot).
Especially, the moon is an ordinary metaphor for “Satori”, a state of spiritual enlightment.
What these things have in common is the white color.
White implies “purity”.
Japanese has traditionally valued white color as the ethos and have had a special felling for ! it.
We have to live in this world where there are lies and dishonesty here and there.
I want young Japanese to know that Japanese people have passed the purity represented by the white color from the far past.
