この国の縄文のその昔から
伝えつたえしかたを見せばや
相撲は日本の国技とされています。
栃錦や若乃花が活躍した時代に育った私は、相撲というと、不思議に横綱が土俵入りにつけてくる白い綱の紙垂（しで）を思います。あの白い紙は神の依り代で、綱は神の存在をみせているというものです。
相撲はノミノスクネ（野見宿禰）とトウマノケハヤ（当麻蹴速）が１１代垂仁天皇の御前で取ったのが始まりとされますが、古事記にいう国譲りの神
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 話にその原型があるともいわれています。
江戸時代にプロスポーツ化した相撲は、型のかたまりといわれるほど厳格な型世界です。私はこの相撲と茶の湯に日本人の好みというか、日本なるものの塊を感じています。
神聖で清き「かた・かたち」を好み、きれいを求めケガレを厭う。日本人が最も好ましいと思う情感です。
横綱貴乃花は型がきれいな横綱でした。今、最強の横綱白鵬はかつての貴乃花に風体が似ていると思いますが、似ていないのが懸賞金を手にした時の所作です。
その作法は個人が持っているクセばかりではなく、民族性や生活風習か培ってきた型の違いではないかと思えます。懸賞を受け取ることには何の違いも優劣もありませんが、人々は横綱に、なぜかきれいな所作を求めているようです。
横綱をただの相撲取りとせず、神の化身、大いなるものとしたところに、強くきれいな姿に憧れる日本人の特質が見え隠れしています。
”きれい” beautiful
Hope I can show “Kata” having been taken over and handed over in this country
since a long time ago like the Jomon period.
相撲, Sumo wrestling is known for the Japan’s national sport.
I grew up in “栃錦 (Tochi nishiki)” and “若乃花 (Waka no hana)” generation and talking of Sumo, I often visualize “紙垂 (Shide)” ,attached fluttering papers to the white rope and put on by “横綱 (Yokozuna)”, grand champions in “土俵入り (Dohyo iri )”, the ring entering ceremony. That white paper means dwelling place of Gods and that white rope means Gods’ existence.
It can be said that the beginning of Sumo is a match between ”野見宿禰 (Nomi no sukune)” and “当麻蹴速 (Touma no kehaya)” watched by the 11th Emperor “垂仁 (Suinin)”.
Or it can be said that original form of Sumo is written in “古事記 (Kojiki)”.
Sumo professionalized in the Edo period has hard and fast style. It’s not too much that Sumo is made from just “Kata”. Moreover, I feel Japanese tastes or a mass of Japaneseness in both “相撲(Sumo)” and “茶の湯(Cha no yu)”.
Feeling of being pure and beautiful in sacred and clean “Kata, form” is the best for Japanese.
“横綱 貴乃花 (Yokozuna Taka no hana)” used to get good “Kata”. I think today’s most powerful “横綱 白鵬 (Yokozuna Hakuhou)” is similar in appearance to “貴乃花 (Taka no hana)”, but they have different actions before received the cash prize for winners.
I feel their behavior is influenced not only by habits but differences of “Kata” in ethnicity or the ways of living. Receiving the prize is noting difference. Of course, nothing is inferior.
But somehow people expect “横綱 (Yokozuna)” to do cleanly.
When people think “横綱 (Yokozuna)” is not only a sumo wrestler but avatar or something great, I can realize a piece of Japaneseness for being strong and beautiful.
